After days of intense to very intense rain, the monsoon is slated to enter its lull phase over Pune from Friday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Thursday removing the yellow alert over the city and its surrounding region.
According to the weather bureau, the break in monsoon for Pune is expected to remain till June 3.
The present lull in the monsoon, which is expected to start from Friday, would allow civic bodies to speed up pre-monsoon work, including cleaning of stormwater drains, etc.
On Wednesday, monsoon advanced into more parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka, with its northern limit lying over Mumbai, Ahilyanagar and other parts. IMD has said the monsoon will cover more parts of the country in the next few days.
Monsoon has been exceptionally active, with the country as a large receiving 161.5 mm of rainfall as against its normal of 123.3 mm it is supposed to get.
Monsoon has also been very active over Pune from May 1, with IMD recording 2164 per cent of the normal rainfall it receives. As against the normal 11.8 mm of rainfall, the Pune district has received 255.8 mm of rainfall.
While parts of Pune city saw heavy rain, the Pune district reported flooding in various parts. After heavy rain, a portion of the Khadakwasla Left Canal in Indapur was breached, which saw around 14 villages being flooded. The ghat areas of Pune also received very heavy rain, affecting traffic.
Pre-monsoon showers have also been very active in Pune, with the city and the district reporting rain since the first week of May. A low-pressure area over the Arabian Sea brought rainfall continuously in and around the district.
Pune, which recorded exceptionally high summer temperatures, saw relief post the rain.
