According to officials from Walchandnagar police station under Pune rural police, around 7.30am on Wednesday, a local villager spotted the severed leg on the Kalamb Nimsakhar road in Kalamb village— around 130km from Pune city—and immediately informed the police. Teams from the local police station rushed to the location.

“Initial observations suggest that the leg is of a male, possibly middle-aged. It is severed from below the knee. Multiple teams from the local police station, team of forensic analysts, a dog squad and teams from Local Crime Branch were pressed into action,” said an officer from Pune rural police. Officials said that the leg has a sock and that a gunny bag has been found near the location, which might be connected to the case.

Officials said a coordinated search of the area, that is mainly under sugarcane cultivation, has been launched with the help of the local volunteers. “We are looking into reports of serious injuries, missing persons reports from police units in Pune and neighbouring districts. The CCTV cameras on the approach routes to the location are also being checked,” said the officer.

Police sources said investigators are also probing the possibility that the severed limb may have been dumped at the spot from a moving vehicle. The area’s proximity to district borders has prompted coordination with neighbouring police units. Forensic experts are examining the tissue for signs of decomposition and tool marks to determine the nature of injury, officials said.
