Lack of consensus delays inclusion of 15 villages in PMC jurisdiction

Lack of political consensus and opposition by some villages have further delayed the proposal of inclusion of 15 more villages in the jurisdiction of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

Lack of political consensus and opposition by some villages have further delayed the proposal of inclusion of 15 more villages in the jurisdiction of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

“The proposal has been postponed by a month,” said Datta Bhairat, chairperson of Legal Committee on Monday.

The reason for postponing decision on the proposal is owing to lack of political consensus,he said.

“A few villages have also opposed their inclusion in the PMC,” he added.

In 2007,the civic administration had proposed to include 15 more villages in its jurisdiction. The NCP,along with the Congress, had opposed it in the past but now is in favour of it. After coming to power, the NCP tabled the proposal before the legal committee.

Due to rapid urbanisation, the civic body had decided to include 38 villages in civic limits but 15 were dropped from it after opposition from the villagers.

The decision of merging 38 villages was taken in 1997 during the saffron combine regime while the Congress-NCP alliance, after coming to power, decided to include 23 villages instead of 38 in the civic jurisdiction.
