The minimum temperature in Pune touched 13.4°C on Tuesday, marking the coldest night and early morning of the season. This is lower than normal for this time of the year. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts that it is going to stay that way – 13°C on Wednesday and Thursday – before rising a bit to 14°C on Friday and a degree or two more over the next few days.
Chinchwad, Lohegaon and Lavale had the highest minimum temperatures at around 16°C , while Pashan was the coldest at 13.1°C.
The chill is spreading across Maharashtra, with Lohgaon, Ahmednagar, Kolhapur, Malegaon and Mahabaleshwar, among others in Central Maharashtra, recording below-average minimum temperatures. Jalgaon had recorded the state’s first single-digit temperature on Monday. On Tuesday, as well, it remained the coldest, recording a shivery 9.2°C, which is 6.7°C lower than average.
“Cool air blowing from the western Himalayan region comprising areas of Jammu Kashmir, Ladakh, Uttarakhand and Himachal along with Northerly winds makes its way through Central India influencing the weather in North Central Maharashtra including Pune,” says Dr Anupam Kashyapi, former head of weather forecasting at IMD.
Winter has set in across the country. IMD says that minimum temperatures were below normal, by 1.6°C to 3.0°C, at many places over Konkan and Goa, besides some places in Marathwada. The minimum was appreciably below normal, i.e. by 5.0°C to 3.1°C, in Vidarbha.
Kashyapi says that children and the elderly, in particular, should take precautions against cold and cough. This weather is likely to help farmers in the growth and production of short-period vegetables, such as spinach and methi or leguminous crops, such as lentils and peas.
