Diwali shoppers caught in the downpour on Wednesday evening have to wait a few more days for better weather. The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Pune, has said the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon is underway over north and central Maharashtra, which includes Pune, during which there will be short spells of rain in parts of the city for the next 24-48 hours.
On Wednesday, Pashan recorded 34.4 mm of rainfall and Lohegaon 20.4 mm of rainfall, while Chinchwad received 3.5 mm of rainfall. In Shivajinagar, the rainfall was 12.2 mm. The variations are due to localised convection, caused by a rise in temperature, hot air rising, and the formation of clouds, according to the IMD. These are characteristic of the withdrawal of the monsoon. As a result, conditions were created when some parts of Pune city experienced thunderstorms and lightning across a radius of 5-10 km, while other parts were sunny.
“We are expecting similar conditions on October 9 and 10. There is no reason to sound an alert. We are informing people of a possibility of light rainfall in the city. This is, however, not the weather to go out,” says SD Sanap, scientist with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Pune. Monsoon is expected to withdraw from north and central Maharashtra by October 10; the cloudy skies are likely to make way for clear weather from October 11.
Pashan, with its tree cover, continued to be the coolest, with a minimum temperature of 18.7 degrees Celsius, while Magarpatta recorded 22.8 degrees Celsius on Wednesday.
“The days will start getting cooler after mid-October as the moisture reduces in the air. There will be considerable diurnal variations, where the days are moderately hot and the temperature will fall early in the morning,” said Anupam Kashyapi, former head weather forecaster and crop advisor at the IMD.
