After SP College row, state tells education dept to fill up vacant seats

Once this came to the notice of the deputy director’s office,a probe was launched.

Ending the confusion over the Sir Parshurambhau College (SP College) ‘illegal’ admission issue, the state government has issued a notice to the Deputy Director of Education’s office to only fill up vacant seats present in class XI in colleges across Pune.

“As per the notice that we got from the state government, only vacant seats present across the city in class XI have to be filled on the basis of merit. It has not mentioned additional seats anywhere. So the question of additional division or seats does not arise,” said Suman Shinde,Deputy Director,Secondary Education,Pune.

SP college had allegedly given admission to over 70 students in class XI through the ‘back door’. Once this came to the notice of the deputy director’s office,a probe was launched. The admissions were rendered cancelled and the principal of the college resigned. The college submitted a revised proposal in October to carry out the admissions on the now-vacant seats at the office of the Deputy Director of Education (Pune region),which was then forwarded to the state government for approval.

Currently the number of vacant seats present in class XI was not available with the officials. “We are in the process of collecting data of vacant seats from various colleges. Even the number of admissions done by SP college is not clear. Sometimes they say it is 90,sometimes 80. So we do not know exactly how many students are there who need admissions,” said Shinde.

Indicating that the students who have already got admission in any of the junior colleges will not be able to apply,Shinde said,“This is not a second round of Centralised Admission Process (CAP). The students who have already got admission will not be allowed to take admission.”

She further said,“There were 37 students who had come to us after the whole issue of SP college and given in writing that they are ready to accept admission in any college and not necessarily in SP college. We will give them admission based on their merit and vacancy available. There will be a table for admission kept in Garware college on November 28 for all such students who have not secured admission in any college.”
