A special court in a recent order rejected the bail application of a shop owner booked in the Gadchiroli blast case, where 16 including 15 security personnel were killed in 2019. The court noted that there has been no change in circumstance since the last time the bail plea of Kailash Ramchandani was rejected in 2021.

Among the grounds cited by Ramchandani to seek bail was that he is facing a serious health issue, that of a lump in his stomach, but has not received proper treatment and the delay in being granted medical attention has worsened his health. He also cited that in 2022 the Bombay High Court had directed the trial to be completed within two years. The trial is yet to begin.

“It is not the case of the applicant that the treatment required is not being provided to him or is not available at Sir J J Hospital. The applicant is chargesheeted for serious offences,” special Judge Rajesh J Katariya said in his order.

He also cited that the court is overburdened with cases which are under trial. The court said that it had 81 such cases in which 278 accused are currently in jail, with six of the cases made time bound to be completed within a stipulated time by the Bombay High Court.

Stating various dates when either the accused were not produced before the court from jail or other reasons, the court said it cannot be said that there is delay on the part of the prosecution.

Ramchandani, a resident of Gadchiroli, who owns an electronic shop, was booked in the conspiracy for the blast which took place on May 1, 2019. Twelve accused were arrested in the case.
