The Mumbai police crime branch Sunday arrested a 34-year-old man for allegedly issuing death threats to NCP leader Sharad Pawar on Facebook. The accused, Sagar Barve, an employee of a well-known IT company in Pune, had put up the threat post under a different name.

A senior officer said Barve was arrested in Pune and produced before a court in Mumbai which remanded him in police custody till Tuesday.

An officer said as per the primary probe, Barve is not linked to any party. He added that it is not clear why he posted the message.

In a Facebook post, under the name of Narmadabai Patwardhan, the accused had said that Pawar, too, will be killed like Narendra Dabholkar.

Pawar’s daughter and NCP working president Supriya Sule recently met the Mumbai Police commissioner, following which an FIR was registered at LT Marg police station and the probe was handed over to the crime branch.

In addition to the Facebook post, the NCP highlighted a tweet to the commissioner. A senior officer, however, said that no one was specifically mentioned in that post.

“We will be calling the person for questioning, based on which further course of action will be decided,” the officer added.
