Nearly 95.54 lakh voters of the state will exercise their franchise on Friday during the first phase of polls to determine the fortunes of 97 candidates who are in the fray in the five seats of Vidarbha.
Some prominent faces fighting the polls in this phase include Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and senior BJP leader Sudhir Mungantiwar. The voting will be held in five phases in the state. In the first phase, Ramtek, Nagpur, Bhandara-Gondia, Gadchiroli-Chimur and Chandrapur will go to polls.
With 28 contestants, Ramtek has the highest number of candidates while Chandrapur with 15 has the lowest.
Voters including 48.28 lakh men, 47.26 lakh women and 347 transgenders will cast their votes in 10,652 polling centres. A total of 21,527 ballot units, 13,963 control units and 14,755 VVPAT machines will be put to use.
In 2019, the BJP had won three–Gadchiroli-Chimur, Bhandara-Gondia and Nagpur seats. The undivided Shiv Sena and Congress had won Ramtek and Chandrapur respectively.
A direct fight between the Congress and BJP is on the cards in four of the five seats.
