Shiv Sena (UBT) leader and Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Legislative Council Ambadas Danve has alleged that the police were collecting money from motorists travelling on the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi Expressway.

Danve tweeted out a video on Wednesday in which a police officer can be seen receiving cash from motorists.

As per the video, people were seen at separate locations on the expressway handing over money to traffic policemen,  who in turn would put the cash into their pockets.

“The government had claimed that a lot of people would be employed through the Samruddhi Expressway. But the government did not mention that those who already have a job will benefit in this manner,” Danve said in a tweet, tagging Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, CMO Maharashtra and Maharashtra DGP.

An official from the state highway police department said an inquiry would be conducted in the matter to check the veracity of the video and the allegations.

The second phase of the Samruddhi Mahamarg, a stretch of 80 km between Shirdi and Nashik, was inaugurated by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in May.
