With examinations ahead and as many as 152 colleges affiliated to Mumbai University (MU) failing to complete the process of eligibility-enrolment of more than 12,000 students admitted to various courses in the 2023-24 academic year despite repeated reminders, the MU has issued an ultimatum to complete the process within eight days, failing which results of all these students will be withheld.
Every year, lakhs of students take admission to various courses offered by MU through its affiliated colleges.
These admissions for traditional (such as BA, BCom, BSc. etc) as well as for professional (such as engineering, law etc.) courses are completed at individual-college levels.
But considering that many of these new students come from different states or different universities, they are required to submit crucial documents such as transfer certificate (TC), or migration certificate.
Eligibility-enrolment process entails verification of these documents, which is essential for students to receive MU degree, after completing their course.
A senior official explained: “While students have to submit these documents at respective colleges where they have taken admissions, it is then the responsibility of these colleges to further submit these documents to varsity’s eligibility department for verification so that the student’s enrolment can be completed. Until completion of this verification, admissions of these students are considered provisional and their exam results are kept reserved under Result Pending for Verification (RPV) category. In the absence of this verification, the final degree marksheet, too, cannot be issued to these students.”
MU officials said pending verification of 12,319 students from 152 colleges is the backlog of only one academic year.
From the 2022-23 academic year, the same verification is pending for 6,209 students from 90 affiliated colleges.
The official said in every academic year, colleges have time till August-end to complete the submission of required documents, as admissions are expected to conclude by then.
“These deadlines are also extended every year considering delays in admissions or troubles that students might be facing to obtain the required documents. But despite all these considerations, the verification process is pending for students who have taken admission since 2020 till 2023. For the ongoing academic year (2024-25), the process is ongoing with extension,” said the official.
