Actor Chrisann Pereira’s arrest, jail time and eventual release evoked mass solidarity across the city and country and raised hope for another man lodged in prison in Sharjah on similar charges. The Sadak 2 and Batla House actor was lodged in the Sharjah prison since April 1, when she was arrested for the possessions of drugs, which were unknowingly planted on her out of revenge. Here are the key developments in the case:

🚨 The Mumbai Crime Branch arrested two persons for allegedly framing Pereira by giving her a memento that had drugs hidden in it. Who is Chrisann Pereira?
🚨 The police found that Anthony Paul had tried to frame four others in a similar manner since January to extract revenge for various reasons — a break-up, jealousy, work-related issues, and fight over Covid-19 restrictions. Who is Anthony Paul?
🚨 Police also found that Paul devised the plan to exact revenge after seeing a video on YouTube last year about stringent laws against narcotics in Islamic countries. Read the Indian Express report on how ‘drug mules’ often tricked into carrying contraband
🚨 26 days after she was imprisoned, Pereira was freed. She said she washed her hair with laundry detergent powder Tide and made coffee using toilet water. Meanwhile, she also said in an Instagram post that she was treated well by the police after her arrest.
🚨 The case now has made the family of Clayton Rodrigues, allegedly framed in a drugs case, hopeful about his release from the Sharjah prison.
