A 43-year-old man allegedly driving at high speed under the influence of alcohol rammed his Audi car into an autorickshaw, which hit another autorickshaw, injuring four persons in Mulund, early on Monday. One of the four persons suffered a leg fracture and had to undergo a surgery.

The accused, identified as software engineer Vijay Gore, fled from the spot but was tracked down and arrested later based on the registration number of his vehicle.

According to police, the incident took place around 6.15 am on Monday at Dumping Road in Mulund (west) when Gore was driving back home from Thane where he went Sunday night. As he was driving after consuming alcohol, he lost control over the Audi that he had purchased second hand, and rammed it into an autorickshaw, police said.

In the impact, the autorickshaw was thrown off on to another autorickshaw, during which the drivers of both the vehicles and two passengers sustained injuries. Gore fled the spot on foot, leaving behind his car that was impounded by the police.

Passersby took the injured to a local hospital where the condition of all four is stated to be stable, police said.
“One of the victims had a leg fracture and has undergone a surgery,” said Ajay Joshi, senior inspector, Mulund police station.

The hospital alerted the police, following which an FIR was registered against the unidentified driver under relevant sections of the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS).

Based on the registration number of the car, police tracked down Gore from his sister’s residence at Kanjurmarg and arrested him.

Joshi said that based on his initial medical report, he was drunk when the accident took place. Police are trying to find how much alcohol he had consumed. An officer said that Joshi was married and resided in a society in Kanjurmarg.

The incident follows a recent accident in Worli, where a woman died after a BMW rammed a two-wheeler. Before the Worli incident, there was outrage over an accident in Pune where a minor boy driving under the influence of alcohol rammed a two-wheeler, killing two IT professionals.
