Three minors from a group of five are feared to have drowned near Marve Creek in Mumbai’s Malad Sunday morning. Two children were rescued by local fishermen. As per the initial police probe, the five had gone to the creek for a swim.

The missing minors have been identified as Nikhil Sajid Kayamkur, 13, Subham Rajkumar Jaiswal, 12, and Ajay Jitendra Harijan, 12. The two who were rescued have been identified as Krushna Jitendra Harijan, 16, and Ankush Bharat Shivare, 13. The fire brigade along with the police and coast guards is conducting a search operation for the missing children.

“When we asked the two rescued children who were still very scared from the accident, they informed us that they went to the creek to clean their feet. But the local onlookers informed us that they saw them swimming before they started shouting for help,” said an officer from the fire department.

“Although the creek is smaller in size, it is full with water and has become deeper due to the monsoon. So, people, especially children who are not trained in swimming, are advised to avoid swimming in such creeks as they often fail to gauge the rise in the depth of the water in the monsoon,” the officer added.

The surviving children did not suffer any severe injuries. They were referred to a local hospital but discharged after health check-ups.

On Saturday, three youngsters drowned in the Chinchoti waterfall, Vasai. The area turns into a popular trekking trail during the monsoon.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) Saturday issued a yellow alert for Mumbai and other districts in Maharashtra, predicting moderate to heavy rainfall for the next five days.
