The Mumbai Police Wednesday booked MNS leader Avinash Jadhav for allegedly attempting to extort Rs 5 crore from a gold dealer.
Jadhav, who hails from Thane, was booked on the basis of a complaint filed by a gold dealer from south Mumbai Shailesh Jain.
Jain claimed that he was involved in a business deal with an individual named Vaibhav Thakkar from February 2024 onwards. In his complaint, Jain claimed that Thakkar defaulted on payment of Rs 33 crore after purchasing gold from him.
When he pressed Thakkar for payment, he sent an amount of Rs 5 crore through his driver on April 29.
On April 30, however, the complainant said that he received a call from Thakkar in which he was asked to speak to Jadhav who claimed that Rs 5 crore which was given to Jain on April 29, was his money and it should be returned to him.
While Thakkar did not pay heed to the call, the parties involved had another meeting on May 1 where Jain held discussions with Thakkar in his office. During the said meeting there was a dispute between the two parties.
Thakkar subsequently called up Avinash Jadhav who was sitting in a car outside. At the same time Thakkar’s wife called up the police who too arrived at the scene.
The complainant has claimed that Jadhav assaulted his son in front of the police.
“On May 1 Avinash Jadhav along with six to seven individuals conspired and trespassed in my office and brutally assaulted my son in front of the police. They threatened to kidnap me and demanded Rs 5 crore,” Jain said in his complaint.
The police, meanwhile, have booked Jadhav and Thakkar on charges of extortion, trespassing and conspiracy.
No arrests have been made so far and the Mumbai police have dispatched teams to Konkan where Jadhav is supposed to be located.
