A day after fire broke out at Jogeshwari’s JMS commercial building – the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) officials said that the authorities are going to send a notice to the management of the building as well as disconnect the electricity and sewer lines of the structure.
“The building didn’t have an occupational certificate (OC), nor did it have an NOC from the fire brigade which was mandatory for them to acquire since there are so many offices inside the building. Therefore, we will send them a notice seeking explanation for the lapses and in the meantime the electricity and sewage lines will be disconnected,” Ravindra Ambulgekar – Mumbai chief fire officer (CFO) told the Indian Express on Friday. He also said that there were multiple illegal alterations that were made in the building.
“The building had several illegal alterations, from creation of false ceilings to additional installations made by the authorities. We have prepared a list of these alterations and have sent them to the local ward office which will take further action,” he added.
A day after the fire incident took place, a group of MFB officials inspected the premises. The officials said that the fire fighting system in the building was not working due to which the blaze became more intense. The authorities also stated that the in-house fire prevention equipment like extinguishers were also non-operational.
“The in-built system needs to be audited and verified once in a year. In this case, that was not done. So clearly, the blaze had spread due to a series of several lapses,” he added.
On Thursday’s incident as many as 27 people were trapped inside the building after the blaze broke out. These people were rescued later by the authorities and out of the injured, 17 had experienced severe injuries and were sent to the hospital for treatment.
After the blaze was reported, the rescue operation became severely challenging since the building didn’t have windows for ventilation and had a glass facade. The flames couldn’t escape out of the building which created visibility issues due to which the firemen had to break the glass window to carry out rescue operations.
A level 2 fire was reported at a commercial building in Malad’s Mindspace area. According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) disaster management cell, the blaze was reported around 6.40 am on Friday and was extinguished around 10.30 am. The blaze was reported inside an office space that was located on the fifth floor of the ground plus a six floor structure. The fire brigade had deployed seven fire engines and four jumbo tankers in the incident. No injuries were reported.
