MD seizure: Factory owner is son of retd judges

Saurabh Gondhalekar, 40, the director of of Apex Medichem Pvt Ltd, who was arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Ahmedabad in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar (Aurangabad) for his factory’s involvement in production/storage of large amounts of psychotropic substance mephedrone or MD, is the son of a retired judge couple.

Saurabh’s father, Vikas Gondhalekar is a retired civil sessions judge, while his mother Archana Gondhalekar retired as additional public prosecutor from the Aurangabad bench of the High Court.

Earlier, she was a civil court judge.

Saurabh, along with other accused Shekhar Pagar, the warehouse manager, were arrested by the DRI on Sunday after the agency recovered about 107 litres of mephedrone worth Rs 160 crore from the company’s factory.

“Jondhalekar and Pagar were arrested under relevant sections of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and on Monday. They were sent to judicial custody till November 4 by the sessions court in Aurangabad. Earlier, two more accused were arrested in the case by DRI,” said special public prosecutor Parikshit Dawalakar.

Recent searches of two factory premises of company M/s Apex Medichem Pvt. Ltd. resulted in the recovery of about 107 litres of liquid mephedrone. Value of these narcotics drugs and psychotropic substances in the illicit market has been reported to be approximately Rs 160 crore, the DRI stated.

This was a follow up action by the agency’s Pune Regional Unit, DRI, Ahmedabad and Crime Branch, Ahmedabad, which had on on October 20 seized mephedrone, ketamine and cocaine, having illicit market value of approximately Rs 250 crore were seized.
