The BJP, which registered its best-ever electoral performance in Maharashtra, has firmly stamped its dominance over Mumbai by winning 15 of the 17 seats it contested. Meanwhile, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena, once the most dominant political force in the city, managed to maintain its foothold, securing 10 seats—half of its overall state tally.
Together, the Mahayuti coalition claimed 22 of the 36 seats in Mumbai, while the Maha Vikas Aghadi won 14. Notably, Sharad Pawar’s NCP was unable to secure a single seat in the city.
BJP’s successful Mumbai run
Among the big winners of the BJP were minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha, who won his seventh term, and won by a margin of 68,019 votes. The largest win by margin was of first-time candidate Sanjay Upadhyay, who won by 1,00,257 votes in Borivali, which has been ruled by the BJP since 1990.
Ten of the 15 winners of the BJP won their third term, including the state’s richest candidate Parag Shah, who won from Ghatkopar (east), and Mumbai BJP president Ashish Shelar, who won from Bandra (west).
Among the other prominent BJP winners were Rahul Narwekar, who as the Maharashtra Speaker, was at the helm of deciding the fate of disqualification of MLAs, after the Shiv Sena split in 2022, leading to the change in government in the state. Narwekar won his second term from Colaba, winning by a margin of 48,581 votes.
In Dahisar, BJP’s Manisha Chaudhary defeated Sena (UBT) candidate Vinod Ghosalkar by over 44,000 votes. The Sena (UBT) had hoped to translate sympathy into votes for Vinod, who lost his son and former corporator Abhishek Ghosalkar, who was shot dead during a Facebook Live session in February this year.
The BJP, however, lost two seats in the city. Versova sitting MLA Bharati Lavekar lost to Haroon Khan of the Sena (UBT) by a narrow margin of 1,600 votes. Khan is the first Muslim candidate to win on a Sena (UBT) ticket in Mumbai. BJP candidate Vinod Shelar, elder brother of the party’s city president Ashish Shelar, lost to Congress’s Aslam Shaikh in Malad by a margin of 6,227 votes.
Sena vs Sena in Mumbai
This time, Mumbai saw direct contest between Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena and the Sena camp led by Eknath Shinde on 12 seats, six each won by both the camps.
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray retained his seat in the Worli constituency, defeating former Congress MP and now Shinde Sena leader Milind Deora. Aaditya trailed by over 600 votes in only one of the 17 counting rounds but eventually won by 8,801 votes, a far less margin than his maiden win in 2019 when he won by 67,427 votes.
Aaditya’s cousin Varun Sardesai too made his maiden poll debut, defeating sitting MLA Zeeshan Siddique of the NCP (Ajit Pawar) in the Bandra east constituency by over 11,000 votes. In 2019, Zeeshan, who was a Congress candidate, had defeated undivided Shiv Sena by 5,790 votes.
Zeeshan’s father and NCP leader Baba Siddique, who enjoyed much clout in suburban Bandra, was murdered last month. Zeeshan said his father’s experience and guidance would have helped him differently and he could not live up to his father’s expectations.
Sardesai said people from all communities voted for him and the seats which are next to each other—from Kalina to Shivadi—have reposed faith in the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena once again. “Matoshree (Uddhav Thackeray’s residence) is in Bandra east. Last time, we lost this seat and people were not happy. They put their faith in Uddhav Saheb this time. We have won Mahim and Worli and Shivadi too. All these seats are next to each other. This entire belt has shown faith in the Shiv Sena (UBT) once again,” said Sardesai.
Four of Sena (UBT)’s candidates—Sunil Raut (Vikhroli), Sunil Prabhu (Dindoshi), Ajay Choudhari (Shivadi) and Sanjay Potnis (Kalina)—won their third terms. Prabhu won against Sena’s Sanjay Nirupam, formerly a Congress MP, by 6,058 votes.
Mahesh Sawant, a first-time candidate of the Sena (UBT), won against Shiv Sena’s two-time MLA Sada Sarvankar, in Mahim. The contest was closely watched as it marked the debut of Amit Thackeray, son of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena founder Raj Thackeray. Amit came third bagging 33,062 votes, over 17,000 votes behind the winner Sawant.
In Jogeshwari East, Manisha Waikar, a first-time candidate from Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction, was leading for most of the day. As the wife of MP Ravindra Waikar, she seemed poised to secure the seat. In the final round, Anant Bala Nar of Shiv Sena (UBT) turned the tables, securing a narrow victory by just 1,541 votes, winning his first term.
Eknath Shinde Sena’s winning candidates included Dilip Lande, who won his second term from Chandivali against Congress’ Naseem Khan. Sena’s Murji Patel won from Andheri East, defeating Sena (UBT)’s Rutuja Latke with a large majority of 94,010 votes.
Others
MVA’s alliance party Samajwadi Party leader Abu Asim Azmi too won comfortably, his fourth term from the Mankhurd Shivajinagar constituency with 54,780 votes. Azmi was contesting against NCP (Ajit Pawar) leader Nawab Malik, who had accused the former of encouraging the sale of drugs and increasing crime in the area.
Malik had given up his Anushakti Nagar seat for his daughter Sana, who fought a close contest with NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) candidate Fahad Ahmad. Sana secured victory with a margin of 3,378 votes.
The Congress, which contested 11 seats, managed to win only three. Its Mumbadevi three-time MLA Amin Patel won his fourth term against Shiv Sena’s Shaina NC, winning by 34,844 votes.
Mumbai Congress president and Lok Sabha MP Varsha Gaikwad’s younger sister, Jyoti Gaikwad, won from Dharavi by a margin of 23,459 votes against Shiv Sena’s Rajesh Khandare. Malad’s Aslam Shaikh won his third term for the Congress.
