The Maharashtra Prison Department told the Bombay High Court that 20 water tanks with a capacity of 5,000 litres each have been installed at Taloja Central Prison and work on five reverse osmosis (RO) plants at the prison will begin on September 1.

A division bench of Justice Revati Mohite-Dere and Justice Gauri V Godse disposed of a plea by Abhay Kurundkar, a former police officer and now an inmate of the prison, who was booked in the Ashwini Bidre death case, seeking adequate water for prisoners for drinking and other purposes.

The HC will hear on September 11 about compliance with the state’s assurance about work on the RO plants. On July 7, the court asked the prison authorities to expedite the installation of RO plants so that inmates can avail purified drinking water. The prison authorities had told the court that it has made sufficient arrangements to provide clean drinking water to inmates and has received 20 tanks, each with a capacity of 5,000 litres, from the Public Works Department (PWD) and the process to install them was underway. The government on Friday said that the tanks have been installed and the work on RO plants will begin next month.
