Ex-AI crew member gives cops the slip

Raj Patel escaped while he was being taken back after a medical check-up.

Former Air India cabin crew member Raj Patel, who was arrested Wednesday for allegedly raping an event management professional on the pretext of marriage, escaped police custody Friday while he was being taken back to the police station from Nagpada Police Hospital following a medical check-up. Police have launched a manhunt to nab Patel.

Patel, arrested by the Mumbai Police Crime Branch’s Unit 9,was handed over to the Borivali police. On Friday evening,Patel was taken to Nagpada Police Hospital for medical tests, which are mandatory for accused in rape cases. He was not wearing handcuffs while he came out of the hospital with two constables accompanying him.

“Once outside the hospital gate, the constables were about to put the handcuffs back when he suddenly broke free of their grip and fled the scene,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Mahesh Patil,Zone 11.

Though the constables tried to chase him,Patel managed to flee. The constables then sent out a wireless message to the police control room, and also informed the Nagpada police about the incident.

“We have registered a complaint against Patel under section 244 of the IPC and are working in collaboration with the Borivali police to trace and apprehend him. We have also informed the Crime Branch about the incident. Further investigations are on,” said senior police inspector Nandkumar Mhetar,Nagpada police station.

Patel allegedly sexually exploited an event management professional promising marriage. He also allegedly forced her to have unnatural sex besides forcing her to undergo an abortion.
