The demolition of Elphinstone Bridge, which began after Friday midnight, has prompted significant changes in BEST bus routes, affecting thousands of commuters across the city.
Jagannath Bhatankar Road, previously the main connector through Elphinstone Bridge, is now closed to traffic. While Mahadev Palav Road, also known as Currey Road Bridge, was opened for diverted traffic, on Saturday, however, the authorities announced that Mahadev Palav Road from Shingate Master Chowk to Bharatmata would be closed to vehicles, necessitating further rerouting of several major BEST bus routes via Chinchpokli Bridge.
Routes impacted by these diversions include numbers 44, 50, 52, 14, 57, 162, and 168. For down-direction travel, routes 44, 50, and 52 will now take a right turn at Krishna Desai Chowk, proceed to Shravan Yashwant Chowk, and towards Worli via Shantaram Pujare and Sant Jagannade Chowk, using Sane Guruji Marg and Chinchpokli Bridge to reach Gulabrao Ganacharya Chowk for onward movement to Worli.
Meanwhile, routes 14, 57, 162, and 168 will take a right at Sant Jagannade Chowk, continue via Sane Guruji Marg to Gulab Ganacharya Chowk, and proceed towards Worli in line with the diversion plan.
On the return journey, the affected routes will rejoin Shingate Master Chowk via NM Joshi Marg and continue along Mahadev Palav Marg to reach Bharatmata Junction. Specifically, routes 14 and 57 will proceed straight eastwards on their original routes from Bharatmata Junction, while routes 162 and 168 will turn left towards BA Road. These will then move on to Madake Buva Chowk, passing under the Parel Bridge, and then turn right eastwards to follow their standard paths.
Commuters are advised to seek updated route instructions before planning their journeys across Elphinstone and Currey Road areas. The measures are expected to continue as long as bridge demolition works continue.
