Doctor, nurse arrested for  plan to sell newborn boy

Police said they were tipped off that a woman had delivered a premature baby boy at a private hospital and that the doctor and a nurse were allegedly preparing to sell the infant with the mother’s approval.

A doctor and a nurse of a private hospital in Mumbai were arrested on Sunday for allegedly plotting plan to sell a newborn boy. The arrested accused have been identified as Kayamuddin Khan and Anita Sawant who work in a private hospital in Govandi, police said.

They were produced in court and have been remanded in police custody till November 21.
According to police, they received information that a woman in her twenties had delivered a premature baby boy at a private hospital on Sunday morning and the doctor along with the nurse, were planning to sell the baby for Rs 5 lakh with the mother’s consent.

Police raided the hospital at around 10 am and found a boy who was born a few hours before. During inquiry, police learnt that the mother had left the hospital, leaving the baby.

Police then traced the mother and admitted her and the baby to a hospital for treatment, said a senior officer of the Shivaji Nagar police station. Further investigation is on, the officer said.
