Discontent continued to brew in the Congress even on the eve of the last day for withdrawal of nominations, with one group in the central suburbs threatening to write to party president Sonia Gandhi and several others continuing to be in the fray as Independent candidates. Even after city Congress chief Kripashankar Singh appealed to the rebels to withdraw from the fray, some insisted that they expected to be given a hearing and a last-minute alteration to the official list.
While Singh has nominated Brian Miranda for Ward 86,Dutt and her supporters reportedly favoured outgoing corporator from another wardDharmesh Vyas. Dutt reportedly refused to meet Miranda and his supporters.
While a group representing the East Indian community stated that they would write to Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Dutts alleged anti-Catholic sentiment,Congress MLA Krishna Hegde pointed out that at least four other Catholics had been given tickets in 29 wards in the region. Theres no question of not giving tickets to Catholics, Hegde said.
Sources said CM Prithviraj Chavan had also spoken to Dutt regarding the seat allocation process and had heard her grievances about not being consulted.
Madhyalkars nomination rejected
The Nomination of Suvarna Madhyalkar, corporator from ward no 30 who was given a Congress ticket from ward no 32,was rejected on Friday. Returning officer A Padwal said Madhyalkars affidavit was not signed by a notary or a competent authority. The affidavit has to be signed before a notary but Madhyalkars affidavit did not bear any signature, he said. Elected from Women OBC reserved ward no 30 in 2007,Madhyalkar was shifted to ward 32,which now has the same reservation while 30 has become an open ward.
