A special court in on Wednesday stayed proceedings against Gitanjali Gems, a company linked to fugitive diamond trader Mehul Choksi and others, in a cheating case.

In his order, Special Judge VS Gaike said that the magistrate court’s order prima facie does not reflect that it had formed an opinion on the basis of material content in the chargesheet. The magistrate court took cognisance and issued summons to eight accused. A criminal revision appeal was filed by one of the accused Vipul Chitalia stating that the order issuing summons was done “mechanically” without explaining the role of the accused.
