A sessions court in Mumbai on Tuesday rejected an application by gangster Abu Salem against his planned transfer from Taloja central prison in Navi Mumbai to another jail.
Salem, who has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case, argued that shifting him out of the Taloja jail which was ‘very safe for him’ was a ‘conspiracy to kill him’ as he was likely to be released in few months and he could be attacked by members of rival gangs in other jails in Maharashtra.
However, the jail authorities told sessions judge B D Shelke that his current cell required reconstruction and there was no other safe cell available for him in Taloja prison and therefore it was decided to transfer him.
The court, while rejecting the plea, asked the jail authority not to implement its order till July 3 so that Salem can approach the High Court challenging the same.
“Any inaction or lapses on the part of Superintendents, Central Prison Taloja and Central Prison, Nashik Road ensuring safety and security of the accused will be dealt with strictly. They both will be held directly responsible for any lapses in providing security and ensuring safety of the accused while transferring him from Central Prison, Taloja to Central Prison, Nashik Road and inside Central Prison, Nashik Road,” the court noted.
The judge asked the Navi Mumbai police commissioner to ensure safety and security of Salem by providing suitable escort to him when he is taken out of jail to be transferred to Nashik central prison.
