The accused burglar who gruesomely attacked actor Saif Ali Khan on Thursday early morning, after escaping the actor’s building, changed his clothes in order to dodge police and prevent getting caught, sources in the Mumbai police department have said.

While launching a hunt for the accused, police scanned dozens of CCTV cameras in Bandra and in one of the CCTV cameras at Lucky Junction, his movement was captured. He was seen wearing a light blue color half-sleeve shirt. In the CCTV at the Satguru Sharan building, however, the accused was seen entering and exiting. In both frames he was seen wearing a full sleeve dark colour T-shirt, a police source said.

Police speculate that as the accused had the intuition to change his clothes, he could be a hardened criminal having a history of committing crimes. The hunt has been intensified and CCTVs of nearby Railway stations are being checked. Police are also checking the CCTVs of all of the city’s exit points.

Early Thursday morning, between 2 am and 2:30 am, a man believed to be in his early 30s snuck into Khan’s 11th-floor apartment, allegedly demanded Rs 1 crore, injured the family’s nanny, and later attacked Khan with a blade six times before escaping.

Khan, who bled profusely, was rushed to the Lilavati hospital by his family in an autorickshaw, where he underwent surgery. Senior doctors say he is stable and out of danger.

The Bandra police have registered a case of attempted robbery, causing grievous hurt with an intention of robbery, trespassing and under other sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita.

Around two dozen police teams are working on the case. One of these teams is trying to obtain leads from police informers regarding any robber with a past history seen in the area recently.
