A 65-year-old man died after he fell into an uncovered drain on Wednesday morning. The deceased has been identified as Omprakash Sharma.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) disaster control cell, a fire broke out at Sawant Marg, which is located between Borivali and Dahisar in the western suburbs, around 2 am during the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday. Fire engines were then pressed into operation. However, Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) officials said a person had fallen into an open drain when they arrived.
“The drain was 20 feet deep and we had to pull the person out by using rope and hooks. This person was rescued safely and was sent to the hospital for treatment,” said an official.
At 4.15 am, the deceased was declared dead by hospital authorities. The officials said the fire was extinguished within a short span and nobody sustained any burn injury.
