31 children rescued from hotels,17 held

Social Service Branch rescues 13 girls,arrests six persons from a building in Grant Road area

As many as 31 children,all believed to be aged 8-14,were rescued by the Social Service (SS) Branch of the Mumbai Police from several garages and hotels in south Mumbai’s Nagpada and J J Marg area on Tuesday. The police have arrested 17 people for employing these children.

“We formed teams and raided the area with the help of the local police and several NGOs. We have rescued the children. The children mostly belong to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. They have been sent to the child remand home at Dongri,” said Assiatant Commissioner of Police (SS Branch) Vasant Dhoble.

The 17 people who have been arrested include the managers,cashiers and owners of the hotels and garages.

A case has been registered against the arrested persons at the J J Marg police station.

The SS Branch also rescued 13 girls and arrested 6 persons from a building in central Mumbai’s Grant Road area on Tuesday.

SS Branch officers said the police had received information that the girls were being forced into flesh trade.

The raid took place at the Khudadas building close to the Congress House in Grant Road (East) at 1.30 am on Tuesday.

The police found the girls from several rooms in the area.

“We have rescued them and have sent them for medical tests to ascertain their age. The six accused have been booked under several sections of the Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act (PITA),” said Dhoble.

A case has been registered against the six arrested persons at the D B Marg police station.
