In Malegaon blast case, 30th witness turns hostile

This is the 30th witness so far to not support the prosecution case against seven accused, including Lieutenant Colonel Prasad Purohit, officials said.

In the Malegaon 2008 blast case, another witness has been declared hostile. He denied that his statement was recorded by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) or a magistrate in 2008. This is the 30th witness so far to not support the prosecution case against seven accused, including Lieutenant Colonel Prasad Purohit, officials said.

The ATS had submitted in its chargesheet filed against the accused a statement by the witness. He deposed before an NIA court on Thursday. He was allegedly recruited as an informer by Purohit in 2006, according to the statement.

He had claimed that he met Purohit through an acquaintance and they stayed in touch over the years. The statement further claimed that Purohit had spoken about floating an organisation. The witness statement added Abhinav Bharat was formed and he had also attended meetings in various cities, including Bhopal and Pune. It also added the witness met other accused

On Thursday, he denied that he had given a statement to the ATS and said he was detained by officials. When asked if he recognised any of the accused in the court, the witness recognised Purohit.
