Parts of Uttar Pradesh could see thunderstorms/rainfall on Friday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing yellow and orange alerts for East and Central areas. Heavy rain is highly likely in isolated parts of Eastern UP during the day.
Experts have warned of “climatological extremes” as several regions recorded an extreme fall in maximum temperatures. Areas such as Jhansi, Barabanki, and Amethi witnessed “historical lows” for October — the lowest for the month in recorded history.
In the past 24 hours, Jhansi reported a maximum temperature of 22°C, Barabanki 22.5°C, and Fursatganj in Amethi 23.2°C, according to experts. “These regions recorded their lowest maximum temperatures for October in their observational history, marking the coldest day on record for the month,” claimed an expert.
As per the IMD, an orange alert has been issued for four districts of Eastern UP: Ballia, Pratapgarh, Azamgarh, Mau and their adjoining areas. The alert warned of “thunderstorm with wind speed of 30-40 kmph along with lightning and moderate rain”.
A Yellow alert has been issued for 37 districts of Eastern and Central Uttar Pradesh. As per the forecast, “light thunderstorm with moderate rainfall” is expected across Sonbhadra, Mirzapur, Chandauli, Prayagraj, Sant Kabir Nagar, Varanasi, Ghazipur, Jaunpur, Ballia, Pratapgarh, Chitrakoot, Kaushambi, Bahraich, Maharajganj, Kushinagar, Siddhartha Nagar, Shravasti, Gorakhpur and Deoria.
The alert is also for parts of Central UP like Fatehpur, Rae Bareli, Amethi, Kanpur Nagar, Sultanpur, Ambedkarnagar, Ayodhya, Barabanki, Unnao, Hardoi, Sitapur and Lakhimpur Kheri.
“Under the influence of a well-marked low-pressure area centered over central Chhattisgarh — the remnant of cyclonic storm Montha — along with moisture influx in the lower troposphere and additional moisture from a depression over the Arabian Sea in the middle troposphere, widespread cloud cover and rainfall occurred across the state. These conditions were further enhanced by favorable jet stream winds in the upper troposphere,” explained experts from the IMD’s Lucknow centre.
This, experts said, also resulted in a significant drop in daytime temperatures with maximum temperatures across the state falling well below normal in the past 24 hours.
Meanwhile, experts have warned that with the dissipation of the well-marked low-pressure area by October 31 — which brought light to moderate rainfall to the eastern, central, and southern parts of the state, along with isolated heavy showers in Purvanchal — maximum temperatures are likely to rise by 4-6°C. However, minimum temperatures are expected to dip further by 3-5°C during the first two to three days of November.
