Tension erupted at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) campus late Tuesday evening after a clash broke out between hostel students and the university’s security personnel, leading to vandalism and stone-pelting.
Police said two former students and over a 100 unidentified persons have been booked on charges of rioting, use of criminal force without grave provocation, and related offences. No arrest has been made so far, they said.
According to sources, tensions flared after a vehicle allegedly hit a student.
Police reached the campus on receiving information about the disturbance. Assistant Commissioner of Police (Varanasi) Gaurav Kumar said the situation had been brought under control by the time the police intervened.
Kumar said the clash initially broke out between students and security guards: “We were informed by university officials, and a police team was immediately dispatched.” He added that the Proctorial Board has initiated an inquiry into the matter.
Despite several attempts, university officials could be reached for comment.
Based on a complaint filed by the BHU Assistant Security Officer, police said an FIR has been registered at the Lanka police station against two former students — Ankit Pal and Ankit Singh — and around 100 unidentified persons.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Saravanan T confirmed that an FIR has been registered in the matter.
Station House Officer of Lanka police station, Raj Kumar Sharma, said the complainant alleged that the incident began when two former students on a speeding motorcycle struck a student inside campus Tuesday.
He said the injured student, along with a few others, chased the two-wheeler and managed to catch one of the two riders. They began assaulting him before security staff intervened and brought the motorcycle rider to the security office.
Meanwhile, a large number of students and some outsiders gathered at the spot and attempted to free the youth. In this commotion, police said Ankit Pal was detained by the security personnel. In an attempt to secure Pal’s release, the crowd grew more aggressive.
Police said a few students, their faces were covered with scarves, then began pelting stones. Police said that no injuries were reported in the incident.
