SP promises 40,000 jobs,hike in daily wages to Valmikis

Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav announced recruitment of 40,000 sanitation workers.

Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections,the Samajwadi Party is trying to cosy up with the Valmiki community — who are Dalits and traditional Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) voters — and assured them to fulfill their pending demands and offered sops.

At a rally of the Valmikis or sanitation workers at Jhulelal Park in Lucknow Tuesday, Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav announced recruitment of 40,000 sanitation workers,Rs 5 lakh compensation to such workers who die during cleaning of sewers and increasing daily wages of workers from existing Rs 120 to Rs 250 per day.

He also announced to constitute a high-powered committee that will take up the issue of their regularisation.

While SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav’s participation in the rally was not announced ,and only Akhilesh and urban development minister Azam Khan had to attend the event,he arrived there with Azam.

During his address,Mulayam narrated how he has attending marriage functions of Valmikis and had meal with them. “Even the Valimiki people were surprised. I went there and also shared food with them,” he said.

“We have always stood for the backwards and dalits. Valmiki community has a glorious past and played an important role in the society. But,now they should think about politics and play their role in it,” Mulayam stated.

“We have won Lucknow with your support,now we need the same support for Delhi. Make us politically powerful and don’t lose heart. All your demands will be met. I will personally ask Akhilesh to fulfill them and direct officers to do it,” Mulayam said.

The Chief Minister also said the government was serious about disposal of electronic waste in Moradabad.

Azam,who had taken the initiative to organise the rally,of sanitation workers,reminded that Mulayam,in his previous regime,had declared holiday on Valmiki Jayanti and fixed flexible working hours for female sanitation workers.
