A 67-year-old Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader and prominent jeweller in Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha district, Yogesh Chand Agarwal, was killed along with his adopted daughter at their residence late Friday night. The police said that it was likely that a lot of jewellery and cash was stolen from the house.
Agarwal was the district chief of the Amroha Vyapar Mandal and a patron of the Sewa Bharti, a wing of the RSS. His son and daughter-in-law were sleeping in a separate portion of the house at the time of the incident.
The incident took place in Agarwal’s house situated in the Katra Ghulam Ali locality under the Kotwali police station’s jurisdiction. All the almirahs in the house were broken open and clothes were strewn on the floor, the police said.
“Right now we are clueless about the killers as the house has 15 CCTV cameras but all were non-operational. His son Ishank (42) said they cannot give an estimate of the looted amount which also comprised jewellery,” Amroha Superintendent of Police Kunwar Anupam Singh said. “We have formed four police teams to solve the case and nab the killers. Forensic experts and sniffer dogs too have been pressed into service,” he added.
The police said that it looked like the father and daughter had tried to save themselves from the killers as blood was splattered across the room where the bodies were found. The killers had covered the faces of the deceased before breaking open the locked almirahs, the police added.
“We believe that a lot of jewellery and cash was looted as Yogesh Chand was a prominent jeweller of Amroha town,” SP Singh said.
A cook who saw the father and daughter Friday night is being interrogated for details, the police said, adding that the bodies have been sent for a post-mortem examination.
“We got to know about the killings at 6 am on Saturday when a neighbour first saw the main gate open. On entering the room, she found my father and sister lying in a pool of blood on the floor. We immediately informed the police. Right now, we cannot estimate what the killers took with them,” Agarwal’s son Ishank said.
The police said that Agarwal’s wife Chaya (60) died three years ago during the Covid-19 pandemic. It was after her death that he adopted Shrishti, 27, the daughter of his brother-in-law.
