A jackal was beaten to death by villagers in Tehdia village of Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district on Saturday night after it attacked a man and his daughter, a forest official said.

For the past three weeks, residents of six villages of Bahraich district have been living in fear of wolves, which have so far killed six people and injured around 20 others in separate incidents. Forest officials said it was possible that the villagers mistook the jackal for a wolf and killed it.

The injured have been identified as Raj Kumar, 41, and his daughter Sushila, 21. Both were taken to a hospital for treatment. Bahraich Divisional Forest Officer Ram Singh Yadav said the jackal’s body was sent for a postmortem examination and that the report was awaited.

Late on Saturday night, forest officials received a report that villagers in Tehdia had attacked and killed a jackal after it injured two people. A forest department team immediately reached the spot and found the carcass of the animal, which it recovered from the spot.

A preliminary inquiry revealed that Raj Kumar was sitting outside his house on Saturday night, and his daughter was heading to the fields for some work when the incident took place. The jackal suddenly attacked Sushila. Hearing her cries for help, Raj Kumar rushed to her rescue, but the jackal attacked and injured him as well. Their cries alerted other villagers, who rushed to the spot. The animal then ran towards Raj Kumar’s house, where the villagers surrounded it and beat it to death.

The villagers later reported the matter to the forest department.
