The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court Saturday dismissed a PIL against the state governments ban on VHPs 84-kosi parikrama of Ayodhya,scheduled to begin Sunday.
The court said there is no material to show that the proposed yatra is part of religious customs.
The bench comprising justices Laxmi Kant Mohapatra and Devendra Kumar Upadhyay was hearing a PIL filed by advocate Mahesh Gupta,urging the court to direct the state government allow saints perform the parikrama.
The parikrama will start from Makhoura in Basti district on August 25 and conclude at the same place on September 13.
The court observed that there is nothing in the writ petition to show that the 84 kosi-parikrama is a religious custom followed at the place mentioned.
The government counsel also stated that such a parikrama had never been undertaken in the last 50 years.
The VHPs yatra is proposed to cover districts of Faizabad,Barabanki,Gonda,Ambedkar Nagar,Basti and Bahraich.
Citing possibility of a law and order,the state government had denied permission for the parikrama.
