District jail: Transfer of inmates to take 10 days

The Uttar Pradesh Prisons Department began shifting the inmates of the Lucknow district jail to the newly-constructed prison at Mohanlalganj on Thursday.

The Uttar Pradesh Prisons Department began shifting the inmates of the Lucknow district jail to the newly-constructed prison at Mohanlalganj on Thursday. The authorities have set a deadline of 10 days for transferring the 3,000 inmates.

“During this period,none of the undertrials would be taken to the court for attending the trial or hearing their cases,” said Sulkhan Singh,IG (Prisons). The family members will also not be allowed to visit the inmates. Lucknow District Magistrate Chandra Bhanu has already made arrangement for the visit of a magistrate to the new jail premises for extending the dates for the undertrials remand.

Singh also said that the beds and other equipment have been sent to the jail. By Thursday evening,around 300 inmates had been shifted.
