Congress leaders from the state led by AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh on Saturday submitted a petition to UP Lokayukta urging him to conduct inquiry into sale of four state government-owned sugar mills. The Congress leaders also accused the state government of having a nexus with the buyers of the mills.
Addressing a press conference,AICC General Secretary Digvijay Singh, who led the delegation, said the state government should not be allowed to sell PSUs like sugar mills at throwaway prices. If the state government continues to sell PSU units in such a manner, there would be no government property in UP, he told reporters.
In the petition, the Congress leaders stated that the sale of the mills is not in the interest of farmers and the nation. All the four mills have been sold to handpicked buyers, the petition claimed. According to the petition, the valuation has been manipulated to suit the bidders.
The Lokayukta,N K Mehrotra, later assured the Congress leaders of holding an inquiry in the issue within a week.
Commenting about the farmers agitation in Aligarh,Mathura and Agra,Singh said the farmers should be paid compensation as per the market rate. He suggested the UP government should adopt Haryana model for paying compensation after land acquisition. Admitting delay in proposed amendment to the Land Acquisition Act,1894,Singh said,Rail Minister Mamata Banerjee has some reservations over the bill. We are trying to persuade her to accept the bill, he said.
