THE MEERUT division claims tribunal has fixed a fine of over Rs 12 lakh on 69 identified protesters for damaging public properties during their protest against the Agnipath scheme in areas under the jurisdiction of the Tappal police station, Aligarh, in 2022.
Commissioner Alok Pandey has also directed that each of these individuals, some of whom were arrested after the protests, should pay a minimum of Rs 16,969 to compensate the government for damaging public property, which also included damage to a dozen UP Roadways buses there.
The Tappal police station in Aligarh had registered an FIR in 2022 against 66 persons with their names and 450 unidentified under various IPC sections including attempt to murder, rioting and vandalism. Three more names were added to the list after the police investigation. As many as 30 of those named in the FIR were also arrested and were released later. The fine was imposed on them as per the provisions in the U.P. Recovery of Damages to Public and Private Property Act, 2020.
The Centre’s ambitious Agnipath scheme has faced opposition, from political parties and Armed Forces veterans alike, since it was announced in June 2022.
