Wage hike: 3 lakh tea garden workers on hunger strike

A large number of police force have been deployed in the area keeping in mind the sensitivity of the issue.

At least 3 lakh tea garden workers have started a hunger strike in the Terai and Dooars region demanding an “immediate” hike in the wages.

A total of 23 trade unions in the region have formed a joint forum which began its strike on Friday. Barring one tea garden owned by a tea major, production has been shut in all the big and small gardens in the region. The joint forum of the trade unions have demanded the wages of workers be hiked from Rs 95 per day to Rs 322. According to the Dooars Branch of Tea Association (DBTA), the workers in 93 gardens have stopped working and joined the huger strike.

A large number of police force have been deployed in the area keeping in mind the sensitivity of the issue. The DBTA has also taken necessary precautions in case any labour falls ill. Significantly, the wage negotiation meeting is scheduled to take place on February 19 and 20.
