As TMC general secretary Abhishek Banerjee backed Rahul Gandhi over his disqualification from the Lok Sabha and targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his “Didi-o-Didi” taunt against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, he asked his party’s legal cell to “weaponise the Surat court’s judgment” and file petitions against the PM and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari for “insulting women”.
At a rally of TMC’s student and youth wing at Shahid Minar in Kolkata’s Esplanade, the Diamond Harbour MP said, “During 2021 Assembly elections, the Prime Minister (Modi) insulted women by “Didi O Didi” taunt. Why has he not been disqualified for his comment? Why shouldn’t Leader of Opposition (Suvendu Adhikari) be booked for saying that (tribal leaders) Birbaha Hansda and Debnath Hansda “deserve to be under his feet?” I urge our legal cell to weaponise the Surat court’s judgment and move a petition within a month. If Rahul Gandhi’s remark insulted OBCs and can lead to two years of punishment, Suvendu Adhikari also insulted the tribal community. He too should be punished.”
A Surat court had convicted Congress MP Rahul Gandhi in a defamation case for his Modi surname remark and sentenced him to two years of imprisonment.
Abhishek, considered Number 2 in TMC, also hit out at central probe agencies to target the BJP and said, “There should not be a “pick-and-choose policy” when it comes to investigation. We want an investigation and justice if and where there has been corruption… Why shouldn’t there be a custodial interrogation for Dilip Ghosh after his documents were found at (job scam accused) Prasanna Roy’s house? I urge party workers to ignore the propaganda being spread by the Opposition parties.”
“Trinamool Congress (TMC) is the only party that believes in taking action. Action was taken against (former minister and job scam accuses) Partha Chatterjee in six days. Our workers should hold their heads high while going to people. How can Sujan Chakraborty and Surya Mishra issue sermons of truth when CPI(M) leader Manoranjan Patra was convicted of a crime… BJP should suspend Himanta Biswa Sarma, Suvendu Adhikari, and Biswajit Kundu and then question Trinamool Congress, which took action against Partha Chatterjee.”
“If ED and CBI arrest any TMC worker in a false case, I ask them to give me a call and I will stand by you. But our workers have to work for people selflessly,” he added.
After the rally, Abhishek reached Red Road where TMC supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is on a two-day dharna against the Centre.
There Abhishek said, “Whenever we want to do a public meeting, they (BJP) create legal challenges. When I expressed my criticism over some judgment, one of the judges gave an interview to press and said they ‘would have called Abhishek Banerjee by issuing a rule’. But when the country’s Law Minister Kiren Rijiju targeted former judges calling some of them “anti-India,” the same judge is silent.”
