A special ED court judge Wednesday warned the counsel for former education minister Patha Chatterjee that his bail may be cancelled if he does not appear in person for the hearings in the West Bengal “cash-for-jobs scam” case.

Partha Chatterjee and other accused were to appear before the special ED court in the “cash-for-jobs scam”, which is being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate. While the other accused were present in court, Chatterjee’s counsel submitted that he was unable to attend due to illness.

“The doctors did not advise bed rest, then why is he absent? He must appear before the lower court,” said Judge Suvendu Saha.

Judge Saha also said that even though Chatterjee has been granted bail by higher courts, his court has the power to cancel it.

After this, his lawyers informed the court that Chatterjee would appear in person on the next date.

While Chatterjee failed to appear before the ED court in person, citing ill health, sources stated that he has been planning to make a swift return to mainstream politics.

The former minister, who is still an MLA of the ruling Trinamool Congress, has written to Biman Banerjee, Speaker of the West Bengal Assembly, seeking clarity about the next session of the House.

Speaking to the media, Banerjee said, “Yes, I have received a letter from Partha Chatterjee regarding when the next session of the Assembly is. He will be informed in time, just like the other MLAs. He will also be getting the privileges which the other MLAs get”.

The suspended Trinamool Congress leader has also announced his plans to visit his constituency, and interact with residents after his release.

The Enforcement Directorate arrested Chatterjee in July 2022 as part of an investigation into the money laundering aspect of a large-scale “cash-for-jobs scam” in the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) during his tenure as the education minister from 2014 to 2021.

Chatterjee was released on bail on November 11.
