Rain is likely to occur in several districts of south Bengal on Wednesday and Thursday this week with the formation and intensification of cyclone Michaung in the southwest Bay of Bengal due to a deep depression, the Meteorological Department has said.

The cyclone will not have a significant impact in Bengal districts, including Kolkata, beyond a moderate rainfall,  officials maintained. The rain will bring down the temperature in Kolkata and adjoining districts by a few notches, they added. A cyclone alert, however, has been issued for the coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh and north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry as the storm is expected to make landfall on Monday.

On Wednesday and Thursday, moderate rain is likely to occur at some places in Purba and Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Howrah, Hooghly, Kolkata, North and South 24 Parganas, Nadia and Purba Bardhaman districts of south Bengal. Dry weather is likely to prevail in the rest of south Bengal districts, said officials. “The dip in temperature in Kolkata and adjoining districts will be temporary, and not a seasonal shift,” said officials.
