West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will be in Delhi on Saturday to attend the G-20 Summit dinner at the invitation of President Droupadi Murmu. The CM is also likely to meet Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, with whom she shares a cordial relationship, at the sidelines of the event, officials said.

The G20 Summit will be held in New Delhi on September 9-10. On Tuesday, the CM referring to the controversy over a G20 dinner invite in the name of ‘President of Bharat’, had asserted that it’s well known that India was Bharat. She had also criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Centre for trying to “distort the country’s history”.

Addressing a programme in Kolkata, the chief minister had said, “This is a blatant attempt by the central government to distort the country’s history. They are changing the name of historical monuments. They are changing history.” she  had said.

Hailing Banerjee’s decision, the opposition BJP asserted that it is an endorsement that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is leading the country in the right way.

“It is good she has accepted the invite as the prestige of the state is at stake and she is going there representing West Bengal,” senior state BJP leader Rahul Sinha told PTI. He claimed that Banerjee changes her public posturing depending on the turn of events. “Just one day ago, she flayed the Modi government on the issue of ‘Bharat’ in the invitation card and better sense prevailed the next day… It is an endorsement that the way Modi-ji is leading the country is the right way,” Sinha said.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Sujan Chakraborty said, “She criticised the invitation of “President of Bharat” and she also is going there. It would have been better had she not attended the dinner.”

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Mamata’s nephew and TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee also attacked the BJP on the issue and tweeted, “INDIA vs BHARAT is just a distraction orchestrated by the BJP. Let’s cut to the chase and hold the government accountable for skyrocketing prices, rampant inflation, communal tensions, unemployment, border disputes and their empty rhetoric of the double engine (government) and nationalism.”
