‘Humanity and love for mankind’: Mamata lauds Bengal & Japan ties after receiving honorary D.Litt

In her acceptance speech, CM Banerjee expressed deep gratitude and praised Japan for its “humanity and love for mankind,” saying she accepted the honour on behalf of “Maa-Mati-Manush.”

“I sincerely thank the university authorities for coming all the way to Bengal. I am truly overwhelmed. Japan stands as a global example of peace, harmony, and culture. My best wishes to every student of Okayama University,” she said.

Highlighting the long-standing cultural and academic ties between Japan and West Bengal, CM Banerjee said, “This cooperation benefits both teachers and students. Our relationship with Japan goes a long way. Japanese delegates have been attending our Bengal Global Business Summits (BGBS) for the past seven years, and I hope they will continue to participate. We will, of course, send a formal invitation to Okayama University to join the next summit.”

Mamata Banerjee recalled that the invitation to visit Japan and the offer of this honour followed the last BGBS in February, and quipped about her travel plans: “ When I was told this ceremony would take place in November, they told me if I cannot come, they will come, how can I avoid it? Welcoming you is a matter of humanity, not politics. I am truly touched by your presence.”

Banerjee confirmed plans to visit Okayama University and undertake a “small tour of Japan” next year. Lightening the mood, she self-deprecatingly described herself as an “LIP — less important person,” anticipating any fuss around her upcoming trip.

While highlighting an academic partnership Banerjee said it would deepen bilateral cooperation: an agreement between Sister Nivedita University (SNU) and Okayama University.

“The pact between SNU and Okayama University will significantly strengthen educational ties between India and Japan,” she said.

The event saw the presence of several high-ranking officials including state Chief Secretary Manoj Pant, Education Minister Bratya Basu and Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma were present, along with vice-chancellors from the Calcutta University, Jadavpur University and Rabindra Bharati University and other senior academics and dignitaries.
