The Calcutta High Court Thursday sought to know the status of the Kamduni rape-murder case pending in the Barasat fast track court.
Justice Ashim Kumar Roy was hearing the petition, filed by CID inspector Anandamay Chatterjee who is the Investigating Officer (IO) in the case, seeking an order for a quick disposal of the case.
Public prosecutor Manjit Singh apprised the court that the CID had filed the chargesheet against four persons initially and added five other names in the supplementary chargesheet. A total of eight persons were arrested and one person was absconding,he informed the court.
However, when Singh failed to provide further details of the case,Justice Roy remarked that the public prosecutor was pleading the case in a mechanical way. He said the court be informed about the status of the case tomorrow.
Advocate Firoj Ahuja, counsel of the accused, submitted that his clients had no lawyer in the criminal court to represent them. Following the submission,Justice Roy questioned the public prosecutor as to why no lawyer was willing to defend the case of the accused.
Justice Roy also asked both the public prosecutor and the counsel of the accused if they wanted a quick disposal of the case or not. Ahuja pleaded that the accused were in favour of a quick trial but pleaded that they should get a chance to defend their case by lawyers.
Justice Roy,during the hearing, also remarked: Justice hurried means justice buried.
