Ghosh starts fast to protest ‘mental torture’

A senior CID official said Ghosh did not take any food,other than water and medicine,since Wednesday night. However,according to CID sources,Ghosh took fruit juice late on Thursday night.

A six-member team of CPM MLAs led by former minister Abdul Rezzak Mollah on Thursday met senior CID officials in Kolkata to enquire about Ghosh’s health but they were not allowed to meet him.

“We heard Sushanta Ghosh has started fasting to protest the mental torture he has been facing during interrogation. We are concerned about his health and that is why we went to the CID headquarters to talk to the officials,” Mollah said.

Party MLA Anisur Rehman said they did not go to meet Ghosh but to enquire about his health from DG (CID) V V Thambi who said the former minister was well and showed them his medical bulletin.

Rehman said they were told that Ghosh’s blood pressure had dropped as he was not eating. The CID said it might opt for a polygraph test if Ghosh does not cooperate in the investigation.

K Jayaraman,DIG,CID,said the former minister was mostly cooperating,but was not giving direct replies at times and a polygraph test might not be necessary if he cooperated.

Jayaraman said the CID on Thursday arrested Madan Santra,who had surrendered on Tuesday. “We have found inconsistencies in his statement. We have arrested him and he has been remanded in seven days’ police custody,” said Jayaraman.

Asked about the recovery made in the case,he said: “We have made a good recovery after interrogating the arrested persons. But we will not disclose any details now.”
