The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday directed the state government to ensure that law and order is maintained in areas affected by violence after the Lok Sabha polls.

Hearing a petition related to post-poll violence, the High Court said that it was the duty of the state administration to ensure that law and order is restored in violence-affected areas, and in case the state government failed to do so, the Central government would be at liberty to take steps such as deploying Central armed forces.

A Division Bench comprising Justice Harish Tandon and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya had earlier directed the state government to ensure that those displaced by the violence were provided safe passage back to their homes. The Court had also extended the tenure of deployment of central armed forces in violence-affected areas till June 26 from June 21.

However, the court on Wednesday did not extend the date further.

Additional Solicitor General for the Central government had submitted that the deployment of central forces could be extended based on the court’s directions. The High Court said the Centre could take any decision for further deployment of central forces based on the law and order situation.
