As the BCCIs plans of squeezing in two Test matches against South Africa in February-March next year pick up speed,Kolkata seems to be shaping up as strong contender for one of the matches.
The South Africans were initially scheduled to tour India in mid-February next year for five one-dayers,which would be followed by the third edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) Twenty20 carnival starting March 12.
While Jamshedpur,Indore and Goa are tentatively in the race for hosting the three one-dayers,Kolkata and Hyderabad are vying for a Test each, even as Delhi and Nagpur have already expressed interest.
Board sources say that as things stand,Nagpur and Delhi are the two names ahead in the race, but Kolkata and Hyderabad are vehemently pursuing their cases as well. The two state associations of Kolkata and Hyderabad have cited that both Nagpur and Delhi have hosted a spree of international matches 2007 onwards.
Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) joint-secretary Biswarup Dey,a key member of the BCCIs tours and fixture committee pointed out that a decision on the venues for the Tests will be taken later, but Eden Gardens stands a chance of getting one of the Tests.
