The much-awaited skywalk to Dakshineswar Temple will be thrown open before Kali Puja, state Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim said.

“Work is complete and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will inaugurate the skywalk on November 5, ahead of Kali Puja,” Hakim said.

The 340-metre long and 10-metre wide walkway will help visitors reach the temple at ease. Earlier people had to negotiate vehicles in the road below to visit the temple. On any given day, about 50,000 devotees visit the temple and the number crosses lakh on Kali Puja.

In a bid to ease the congestion, Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) came up with the idea of a skywalk in 2014. The skywalk has 14 escalators and four lifts, each having a capacity to carry 20 people. According to a KMDA official, the skywalk has seven stairways for emergency evacuation and has fire safety measures such as alarms and water sprinklers.
