Central team to visit state water conservation projects

On an invitation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who has made water conservation one of her top priorities,the Planning Commission is sending a five-member team headed by Mihir Shah,Minister of state in the Commission,to the state on September 19.

On an invitation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who has made water conservation one of her top priorities,the Planning Commission is sending a five-member team headed by Mihir Shah,Minister of state in the Commission,to the state on September 19.

The team after meeting the Chief Minister will visit Barrackpore in North 24 Parganas and Amta in South 24-Parganas to see the projects run by the state government to find out new water resources.

After assuming power,the CM announced her policy of “Jal dhoro,jal bhoro” (conserve water) and chose the Left Wing Extremist (LWE) affected areas of Junglemahal to start the pilot project. The essential feature of the policy is to conserve water of the rivers during monsoons and release it during summer for irrigation.

“It was the Chief Minister who got in touch with the Planning Commission and told them about her plans and they took immense interest in it. Following her request,now the team is visiting the area,’’ said an official of the department.

The state government has sanctioned Rs Rs 24 crore to construct about 20 check dams on rivers in Junglemahal,said Soumen Mahapatra,minister for Water Investigation.
